          –  A Typical Charter Trip

Most Juneau Fishing trips begin downtown, either from your cruise ship or your hotel. Our ‘limo’ will pick up your party  at a pre-designated location that will be easy for you to find. The harbor used for fishing charters is about 20 minutes north of town. Once we arrive at the boat, a few minutes will be dedicated to a brief orientation whereupon we cast off, which is when our trip begins. To make things as convenient as possible, all equipment, bait and necessary dtails are already provided for. Fishing licemses and King salmon stamps are available for purchase onboard.

The distance we travel to our fishing site will depend on a variety of factors, so conditions change throughout the day. With four hours on the water, travel time is a factor. Weather is also considered. There are various locations where fish are known to congregate, so the skippper will use his bst judgement to determine which area to try.

Trolling is the method used by local charter fishermen –  the idea is to simulate live bait by moving the lure through the water to  instigate a fish strike. There are innumerable kinds of gear available, so the skipper and deckhand will narrow the choices down to what they know to be  the most effective, based on the conditions at the time. Either bait, in the form of herring, or artificial lures, or a combination of the 2, will be most commonly used.

With many types of salmon in the area, it is impossible to predict which ones will end up on the deck. Sometimes it will be the highly sought after King salmon. Early in the summer is the best time to find Kings. At other times, the mix of fish will include all five types that are found in the area. Some people will choose to keep their fish and send them home. Processing and shipping is available to anyone desiring to get their fish home. The processor we use has many years of experience and will provide a product no one is ever disappointed in. What could be more fun than sharing your Alaska fishing stories and your Alaskan fish with your friends and family?

After arriving back at the dock at the end of your charter, transportation will be waiting to take you back to town. Depending on the time available to you, many visitors will choose to take a side trip to Mendenhall Glacier on their way back  to town. The glacier site has a very comfortable visitors center – there is no better place to get an up-close look at a glacier. You may do some walking along the local trail systems. The area is also known for black bear viewing – another favorite activity. The bear viewing area is both safe and easily accessed.

All in all, a Juneau fishing trip will offer a truly Alaskan experience to the traveler, one that will provide for memories to share for years to come. A visit to the ‘Greatland’  would not be complete without it.
